Energy Projects in Georgia IDP villages.
As a result of armed conflict between Russia and Georgia in August, 2008, 52 622 persons received IDP status in Georgia. Wooden cottages for education purposes were built in some IDP villages by Development & Nature Association – Caucasus (DNA). The training courses for IDP children are carried out by NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council) in the mentioned cottages. EcoVision representatives were highly impressed by the positive atmosphere, children’s involvement and very actual and useful thematic of the trainings. The room’s set is also very interesting; the walls are covered by children’s paintings and other illustration materials.
Only inconsistency of the trainings was the conditions of the wooden cottages in terms of energy efficiency. We saw that energy efficiency in the mentioned cottages is dramatically law and even simple and cheap measures for improvement of energy situation are not realized. The cottage walls are built by one layer of wooden boards with wide air-gaps between. The roofs and windows do not have any insulation. The main source of heating is firewood. The cheep stoves, which energy efficiency is dramatically law are usually used for the heating of the rooms.
EcoVision decided to improve energy situation in the mentioned cottages before winter comes and at the same time to teach IDP children how to use energy and resources efficiently.
The pilot energy project was implemented in Tsilkani IDP Village.
Special lecture on energy saving was conducted by EcoVision. IDP children became familiar with main principles of energy saving and energy efficiency; environmental problems (climate change, global warming, etc.) related to energy loss. Practical training how to insulate walls, windows and ceiling was carried out. They received basic skills and knowledge how to improve energy situation in their houses, schools and other places with low cost measures. As a result the cottage in Tsilkani was fully insulated by active participation of children and parents.
The cottage walls and ceiling were covered by special insulating material and after by plywood. According to the energy audit of the cottage the difference between air temperature before and after insulation is 120C.
The successful project in Tsilkani IDP village was followed by another similar project in Phreseti IDP village. The project in Phreseti was co-financed by NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council).Totally 200 m2 walls and 120 m2 of ceiling were insulated. The cheep heating stoves were replaced by energy efficient ones.
As a result of joint projects of SPARE and NRC, SPARE clubs were established in Tsilkani and Phreseti IDP villages. EcoVision staff will permanently carry out energy seminars for teachers and IDP children in the SPARE clubs in the warm cottages in new 2011 year.
